Helen contacted us when she was being chased by HMRC for penalties in relation to two unfiled UK tax returns, while she was living outside the UK.

We reviewed her position and assessed that no tax returns were required for these periods. We contacted HMRC to cancel her filing requirement for the most recent UK tax year. However, due to the timing of dealing with this, we were unable to cancel the filing requirement for the earlier period, therefore we filed a tax return and submitted a penalty period for the earlier period.

The penalty appeal was successful and we also noticed an overpayment sitting on her HMRC account, leading to her getting issued with a refund of £13,956.
